Plainfield's Historic Past
The area was home to many Potawatomi before it was settled by Europeans in the early to mid-1800s. Many fur traders established the community, then called Walkers’ Grove, and the many buildings from earlier eras are still in existence. In fact, Plainfield has three buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Plainfield House, Flanders House, and a Standard Oil Gas Station from the 1920s—each of which is a great place to visit.
