Drivers across Chicagoland recognize the 2019 Honda Civic as one of the most capable compact cars on the road, but with coupe, hatchback, and sedan body types available, finding the model that’s right for you requires some serious consideration. The sedan and hatchback have been extremely popular with our friends and neighbors in Chicago and Naperville, so we’ve set up a comparison of the 2019 Honda Civic Sedan vs. Hatchback.

2019 Civic Hatchback vs. Sedan: Performance

One of the most significant differences in the 2019 Honda Civic Sedan vs. Hatchback comparison is the fact that each has been equipped with a different baseline engine. Although the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback has a higher starting price compared to the sedan, it offers significant advantages in performance right from the start:

  • The Civic Hatchback comes standard with a 1.5L turbocharged I-4 engine, while the Civic Sedan offers a 2.0L I-4.
  • The standard engine in the hatchback offers more horsepower and torque than the sedan’s base engine. The Civic Sedan offers 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque as standard, while the Hatch delivers 178 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque.
  • Although the Civic Sedan has a smaller engine, it actually gets slightly lower fuel economy estimates than the hatchback version. You’ll enjoy up to an EPA-estimated 30 mpg city / 38 mpg highway** in the Civic LX Sedan with its standard 6-speed manual transmission. In the Civic LX Hatchback with a CVT, you’ll get up to 31 mpg city / 40 mpg highway.**
  • A manual transmission is not available at all in the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback, so if you have a strong preference here, the sedan may be right for you. It’s also worth noting that the 1.5L turbocharged I-4 is optional in upgraded Civic Sedan models.

2019 Civic Hatchback vs. Sedan: Interior Features and Dimensions

Every 2019 Honda Civic body style has been updated with a new infotainment system, and they share most of their interior features. However, there are still some significant differences between the interiors of the sedan and hatchback builds:

  • Comparing the 2019 Civic Sedan vs. the Civic Hatchback, you’ll notice that both offer near-identical interior dimensions, except in one key area: cargo space!
  • With 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space, the Honda Civic Sedan has one of the better-sized trunks in its compact class. Even so, it can hardly compare to the hatchback build, which offers 25.7 cubic feet of dedicated cargo space.
  • The Civic Hatchback comes with a standard 60/40-split folding rear seat, while the base Civic Sedan LX does not. This means that the Civic Hatchback interior can be configured to haul up to 46.2 cubic feet of cargo.
