How to Check Car Oil

Checking your car oil, and other important fluids like your transmission fluid, regularly is a great habit to increase the longevity of your Honda car, truck, or SUV. Car oil lubricates the engine and keeps it clean, helping to keep everything running smooth while extending the life of your engine. Checking the oil level in your car is quick and easy to do, follow the steps below to figure out how it’s done.

Checking the Car Oil

After a long commute home from Chicago, you may not want to spend your free time checking your engine. But, checking your engine oil is not just important, but quick and easy, just follow these steps:

1. Grab a rag (or a paper towel if no rags are around) and your car’s owner’s manual.
2. Make sure your engine is not still hot from a recent drive, and open the hood of your car.
3. Remove the dipstick, usually located on or near the engine.
4. Wipe it clean and insert it back into its tube, push it in as far as it can go.
5. Pull the dipstick back out and note the height at which the engine oil reaches on the dipstick. Every dipstick has some sort of system of measurement, and if your oil isn’t at the indicated acceptable level, then you have to add oil.
6. If the oil is at an acceptable level, then you are done! You can now drive around Aurora knowing that you and your passengers are safe.

Adding the Engine Oil

Use whichever type of oil is recommended in your owner’s manual. To add the oil, remove the cap, normally located on top of the engine. Fill it in small increments, making sure to not over-fill. Repeatedly check the engine oil level with the dipstick until it is acceptable. Screw the cap back on and you are good to go. Remember that your oil should be changed regularly to keep your Honda always running safely at peak performance levels.
